Thanks so much for this, Betty Jean. It really made me smile. Ed's humor is both deadpan and quick, and I can just picture the scene you describe. I'm glad he had someone as gracious and observant as you are working with him.
My daughter is a Georgia Bulldog and she and my son-in-law lived in Atlanta for many years. The traffic and mosquitos eventually got to them. I hope you enjoy living there—despite the recent cold. And the traffic.

I remember Dr. Ackell making comments, very deadpan. He would flash a sly grin when he realized we weren't sure whether he was being funny or not. Once we started laughing he'd head into his office chuckling.

I also remember him bringing us shortbread he'd made for the holidays.

I worked for Dr. Ackell, then for Mr. Bruegman after graduation. In 1992 I left VCU--moved to Atlanta in 1999. Currently I'm Director of Finance at a park just outside of Atlanta.

It was a very special experience to be able to work in the President's office while attending VCU.

Hi Betty Jean,
I'm so glad you wrote to me—I'm very touched by your e-mail and kind wishes. I love to hear from people who knew Ed—it's a special connection for me. I agree that he's amazing and brilliant—also very kind and thoughtful. I hope you got to experience his quick wit—he could be very serious when working.

Thank you so much for connecting with me. Are you still at VCU? What are you doing now?

I worked for Dr. Ackell at VCU in the 1980s--first as a student worker while attending VCU, later as an employee. What an amazing, brilliant man! Your book is beautiful. It touched my heart at the same time it saddened me. I'm so very grateful to have his journey chronicled with love.

All the best to the two of you.

Writing is such a wonderful way of expressing ourselves and communicating—it's finding those moments in which to write that's the challenge. I envy those people who are able to blog everyday; it's a discipline—don't you think?
